The first day of the Chinese New Year falls on February 19 this year. It is always a new moon, and this year it is in Aquarius/Pisces. It is a supermoon, no less. Aquarius is all about walking (or skipping or dancing) to your own drum beat and Pisces is the mystical lover. Ruled by Neptune, Pisces is creativity and inspiration and yes, escapism. How synchronistic is this year, starting the new Chinese New Year, with the Aquarius/Pisces New Moon, stepping into the Year of the Goat/Ram/Sheep – love and creativity?
The new moon is releasing the old and setting intentions for the incoming cycle. Building on your dreams with the waxing lunar energy for its realization at full moon. This is why people love new moon meditations.
For many Chinese families, it is traditional to begin the new year having vegetarian meals. Interestingly according to Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe, the authors of Moontime, “on the day of the new moon the body’s capacity for detoxification is at its highest. Anyone who makes it a rule to arrange for a fast-day at the new moon has already done a lot to prevent all kinds of illnesses.” Fasting does aid the detoxification process by not further burdening the natural bodily processes and allowing the body to do its job. Perhaps fasting is a smart way to go on the new moon but with celebrations – celebrations of prosperity, family, and abundance, having no food may be perhaps a cultural faux-pas.
Food brings us together, right?
If you do want to stop eating certain foods, a new moon is a good time to start. New moon, new habits. The other good time to fast is the full moon, when the body does really well absorbing everything. So full moon, hair masks, nourishing facials, bone broth, and perhaps stay away from processed food, vaccinations, etc. Since energy ebbs and flows, there is no cut off point. It is not suddenly full moon but the energy builds or waxes from the new moon and the full moon’s energy can already be felt three days prior.
There is something really beautiful about following the lunar cycle. Connecting with the natural flow of energy is a fantastic way for us to build greater awareness of ourselves.
