What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese term meaning “finger pressure”. This massage works by applying finger and/or palm pressure on certain parts of the body known as acupressure points.

What is Shiatsu? How does it work?

Chinese Traditional Medicine explains that there are twelve major meridians that run through the body. Qi travels along these meridians so that our organs can communicate with one another and work in harmony. Keeping meridians clear is therefore important for the body’s self-regulating actions to occur.

By applying pressure to acupressure points, this approach aids in regulating the flow of Qi throughout the body of the massage recipient.

In Western medicine, its benefits are measured differently and this therapy form has been found to calm an overactive sympathetic nervous system, improving circulation, relieving stiff muscles, and alleviating tension.

How is Shiatsu Different From Other Massage Forms?

Shiatsu does not use oil and is usually completed with the recipient fully clothed. Certain pressure points may feel a little painful at times where tension is being released.

Note that you should never feel uncomfortable pain during any treatment and should always speak up if you feel the pain is too much.
